Abstract
Apparatus and methods for setting one or more packers in a well bore are provided. The illustrated examples allow for setting of a plurality of downhole packers in a short period of time and without using a wash string, wash cups, or other setting tool that is subject to mechanical failure.
Claims22
Apparatus for setting one or more packers in a well bore, the apparatus comprising:
- a base pipe;
- a packer configured to set upon an increase in pressure in the base pipe;
- an inflow control device configured to control flow of reservoir fluid into the base pipe;
- and
- a check valve that is movable from a closed position wherein flow of fluid out of the base pipe through the inflow control device is prevented to an open position wherein flow of reservoir fluid into the base pipe through the inflow control device is allowed;
- wherein the check valve is biased into the closed position;
- and
- wherein the bias is overcome and the check valve is moved into the open position by a positive differential of pressure of surrounding reservoir fluid relative to pressure inside of the base pipe.
In a wellbore completion having one or more packers configured to set when pressure inside a base pipe exceeds a predetermined value, the base pipe having an inflow control device that controls flow of reservoir fluid into the base pipe, an apparatus comprising:
- a check valve that is movable from a closed position wherein flow of fluid out of the base pipe through the inflow control device is prevented to an open position wherein the flow of reservoir fluid into the base pipe through the inflow control device is allowed;
- wherein the check valve is biased into the closed position;
- and
- wherein the check valve is moved into the open position by a positive differential of pressure of the surrounding reservoir fluid relative to pressure inside the base pipe;
- a plug;
- and
- a seat sub coupled to the base pipe and located beneath the one or more packers in the wellbore completion, the seat sub configured to receive and form a seal with the plug, the seal preventing fluid from flowing through an end of the base pipe.
A method for setting one or more packers in a well bore completion string, the completion string having a base pipe and at least one packer that sets when pressure inside the base pipe exceeds a predetermined value, method comprising the steps of:
- preventing flow of fluid out of the base pipe;
- and
- increasing pressure inside the base pipe to actuate and set the at least one packer.
