Abstract
An approach is provided for managing bandwidth utilization. A networking device (e.g., router) corresponding to a customer is audited to determine utilization of a communication link serving the customer. A determination is made whether bandwidth, allocated to the customer, of the communication link is under-utilized. A notification is generated to inform the customer of the under-utilization based on the determination. Further, a determination can be made whether the allocated bandwidth of the communication link is over-utilized, in which case, the notification includes an indication of one or more sources of traffic through the networking device.
Claims25
A method comprising:
- auditing a networking device corresponding to a customer to determine utilization of a communication link serving the customer;
- determining whether bandwidth, allocated to the customer, of the communication link is under-utilized;
- and
- generating a notification to inform the customer of the under-utilization based on the determination.
A system comprising:
- auditing device configured to audit a networking device corresponding to a customer to determine utilization of a communication link serving the customer;
- and
- an analysis module coupled to the auditing device and configured to determine whether bandwidth, allocated to the customer, of the communication link is under-utilized;
- and
- a reporting module configured to generate a notification to inform the customer of the under-utilization based on the determination.
A method comprising:
- obtaining flow information from a router of a customer, wherein the router interfaces with a leased wide area network (WAN) communication link of a service provider;
- determining, based on the flow information, actual data volume usage of the communication link by the customer and whether bandwidth of the communication link allocated to the customer is under-utilized;
- and
- generating a report indicating the under-utilization of the allocated bandwidth and monetized savings associated with reduction in bandwidth allocation to actual data volume usage.
