Abstract
Apparatus and methods are provided for the management of neural activity in an individual. Nerve activity is sensed and correlated with sensations such as pain. In response and without requiring input from the individual, although external input is contemplated, a signal is transmitted to another component for electrical stimulation that alters neural activity. Also, the modulation of the signals between the sensor and stimulator may be modified by a third component independently, independent of, or including user inputs.
Claims20
An implantable neurostimulation system comprising:
- a. at least one implantable sensor capable of wirelessly transmitting signals;
- b. at least one implantable stimulator capable of receiving wireless signals from at least one implantable sensor, wherein the implantable stimulator generates electrical signals in response to the wireless signals to alter neural activity.
An neurostimulation system comprising:
- a. at least one sensor electrode;
- b. at least one implantable sensor having a sensor transmitter and a sensor receiver;
- c. at least one remote processing device having a device receiver and a device transmitter;
- d. at least one implantable stimulator having a stimulator receiver;
- and
- e. wherein the at least one sensor electrode transmits neural signals to the sensor that are wirelessly transmitted to the remote processing device for processing and the device transmitter wirelessly transmits processed signals to the sensor receiver and to the stimulator, whereby the stimulator generates impulses in response to the processed signals to alter neural electrical activity in an animal having the stimulator and sensor implanted therein.
A method of electrical stimulation comprising:
- a. recording electrical signals with an implantable sensor;
- and
- b. wirelessly transmitting the recorded signals to at least an implantable stimulator capable of receiving the signals, wherein the stimulator generates an impulse in response to the recorded signal that alters neural activity.
