Abstract

Disclosed are coatings for medical devices. The medical device can have a surface. The coatings can have a first and a second layer. The first layer can be disposed on at least a portion of the surface of the medical device, and the first layer can comprise a first copolymer. The first copolymer can have a first polymeric unit that can adhere to the surface of the medical device and a second polymeric unit that can adhere to the second layer. The second layer can be disposed on at least a portion of the first layer, and the second layer can comprise a second copolymer. The second copolymer can comprise a third polymeric unit that can adhere to the first layer and a second polymeric unit that can provide the surface properties of the coating. Methods of applying coatings are also disclosed.

Dependent claims

A medical device having an elongated portion having a surface with a coating disposed on at least a portion of the surface, the coating comprising:

a first layer disposed on at least a portion of the surface of the medical device, the first layer comprising a first polymeric unit and a second polymeric unit, the first polymeric unit adhering to the surface and the second polymeric unit comprising polyurethane;
and
a second layer disposed on at least a portion of the first layer, the second layer comprising a third polymeric unit and a fourth polymeric unit, the third polymeric unit adhering to the second polyurethane polymeric unit and the fourth polymeric unit being hydrophilic.
