A process for producing an alicyclic compound represented by formula (I):

• wherein n is an integer of 0 or 1;
• one of R1 and R2 represents —CH2OR4 (wherein R4 represents a carboxylic residue) while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and R3 represents —CH2OR5 (wherein R5 represents a carboxylic residue).
• the process comprising subjecting to an esterification reaction with carboxylic acid an alicyclic compound represented by formula (II):
• wherein one of R6 and R7 represents hydroxymethyl while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and R8 represents hydroxymethyl.

An alicyclic compound represented by formula (II):

• wherein n is an integer of 0 or 1;
• one of R6 and R7 represents hydroxymethyl while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and
• R8 represents hydroxymethyl.

A process for producing an alicyclic compound represented by formula (I):

• wherein n is an integer of 0 or 1;
• one of R1 and R2 represents —CH2OR4 (wherein R4 represents a carboxylic residue) while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and R3 represents —CH2OR5 (wherein R5 represents a carboxylic residue).
• the process comprising subjecting to a hydrogenation reaction an alicyclic compound represented by formula (IV):
• wherein one of R9 and R10 represents formyl while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and R11 represents formyl;
• obtaining an alicyclic compound represented by formula (II):
• wherein one of R6 and R7 represents hydroxymethyl while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and R8 represents hydroxymethyl;
• and
• subjecting said alicyclic compound according to formula (II) to an esterification reaction with carboxylic acid.

An alicyclic compound represented by formula (IV):

• wherein n is an integer of 0 or 1;
• one of R9 and R10 represents formyl while the other one represents alkyl, lower alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl;
• and
• R11 represents formyl.
