Abstract
The present invention relates to a microorganism capable of producing a terpene of choice. The microorganism expresses a heterologous pathway for the formation of isoprene units and, preferably, a heterologous terpene synthase. In this way, high amounts of terpene can be isolated from the medium of the microorganism.

to 21. (canceled)
A recombinant microorganism comprising a heterologous pathway for converting 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DXP) to isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) or dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP), the native metabolism of the microorganism being devoid of the pathway.
A method for preparing a recombinant microorganism capable of accumulating or producing a terpene, which comprises transforming a microorganism devoid of a native MEP-pathway with genes of a heterologous MEP-pathway and at least one gene encoding a terpene synthase to prepare the recombinant organism.
A method for increasing the amount of terpene-precursors in a microorganism that is devoid of a native MEP-pathway, which method comprises transforming the microorganism with genes of a heterologous MEP-pathway and optionally at least one gene encoding a terpene synthase to produce a microorganism that provides an increased amount of terpene-precursors compared to one that is devoid of a native MEP-pathway.
