Abstract
Apparatus and methods for hinging or otherwise easily engaging and disengaging various members to each other include a spring-actuated pin element to selectively extend and retract a pin from one hinge leaf to engage an adjacent structure. A variety of spring elements may be used, and the hinge may be combined with other hinge elements in a variety of ways, including an articulated hinge. Methods of fabrication and assembly are disclosed.
Claims20
A collapsible container comprising:
- a plastic base having a first opening and a second opening configured to receive a first tine and a second tine of a forklift;
- a first plastic side wall pivotally attached to the base by a first hinge apparatus including a leaf portion, a first pin head member housed in said leaf portion, and a spring member forcing an end of the first pin head member to extend from said leaf portion;
- a second plastic side wall pivotally attached to the base by a second hinge apparatus including a leaf portion, a first pin head member housed in said leaf portion, and a spring member forcing an end of the first pin head member to extend from said leaf portion;
- a third plastic side wall pivotally attached to the base by a third hinge apparatus including a leaf portion, a first pin head member housed in said leaf portion, and a spring member forcing an end of the first pin head member to extend from said leaf portion;
- and,
- a fourth plastic side wall pivotally attached to the base by a fourth hinge apparatus including a leaf portion, a first pin head member housed in said leaf portion, and a spring member forcing an end of the first pin head member to extend from said leaf portion.

A plastic container comprising:
- a container base;
- a first side wall extending upward from the container base, a second side wall extending upward from the container base, a third side wall extending upward from the container base, and a fourth side wall extending upward from the container base;
- a drop door pivotally attached to the first side wall by a first hinge apparatus including a leaf portion, a first pin head member housed in said leaf portion, and a spring member forcing an end of the first pin head member to extend from said leaf portion.
