Procedure for the operation of an internal combustion engine, particularly a gasoline engine with direct gasoline injection and controlled self-ignition, whereby the internal combustion engine (1) comprises a combustion chamber (2), at least one intake valve (EV) and at least one exhaust valve (AV), whose opening times can be altered, and an ignitable gas mixture, which contains residual gas, is compressed in the combustion chamber (2) during a compression stroke (V), whereby the gas mixture self ignites during the compression stroke (V). During a load transfer from an initial load to a target load, the residual gas volume and/or the point of injection time is altered for at least one power stroke to an interim value other than the value assigned to the target load.

Device, particularly a control unit, with wherewithal for the operation of an internal combustion engine, particularly a gasoline engine with direct gasoline injection and controlled self-ignition, whereby the internal combustion engine (1) comprises a combustion chamber (2), at least one intake valve (EV) and at least one exhaust valve (AV), whose opening times can be altered, and an ignitable mixture, which contains residual gas, is compressed in the combustion chamber (2) during a compression stroke (V), whereby the gas mixture self ignites during the compression stroke (V), is thereby characterized, in that during a load transfer from an initial load to a target load, the residual gas volume and/or the injection point of time is altered for at least one power stroke to an interim value other than the value assigned to the target load.
