Abstract
Electro-optic amplitude varying elements (AVEs) or electro-optic multi-function elements (MFEs) are integrated into signal channels of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) or at the output of such PICs to provide for various optical controlling and monitoring functions. In one case, such PIC signal channels may minimally include a laser source and a modulator (TxPIC) and in another case, may minimally include a photodetector to which channels, in either case, an AVE or an MFE may be added.

An optical device, comprising:
- a substrate;
- a plurality of optical components provided on the substrate, each of the plurality of components being configured to receive a corresponding one of a plurality of optical signals and a corresponding one of a plurality of electrical signals, each of the plurality of optical components having a corresponding one of a plurality of widths, each of the plurality of optical signals having a corresponding one of a plurality of power levels, each of the plurality of power levels being associated with a corresponding one of the plurality of electrical signals,
- wherein each of the plurality of optical signals has a corresponding one of a plurality of wavelengths, and each of the plurality of widths is different from one another such that each of the plurality of the plurality of optical components imparts a different optical loss to each of the plurality of optical signals.
