Abstract
Retrofitting lighting fixtures (e.g., HID based lighting fixtures) using a pin mounted PL style fluorescent based energy efficient light assembly and methods of installing retrofitting lighting fixtures are disclosed.
Claims20
A lighting retro-fit system for mounting one or more pin mounted fluorescent lamps within an external housing of a lamp assembly, the retro-fit system comprising:
- a light reflector for reflecting light from the one or more lamps in a direction away from the reflector;
- a one piece adapter backing plate comprising:
- one or more arms configured to support the one or more lamps;
- and
- one or more openings configured to enable attachment of the adapter backing plate to a plurality of lamp assemblies of varied design;
- wherein the adapter backing plate is configured to surround a periphery of the light reflector and is configured to mount the light reflector within the external housing of the lamp assembly;
- a mechanical connector configured to attach the light reflector to a reflector mount on the adapter backing plate;
- at least one lamp connection configured to receive the one or more lamps and configured to be attached to one of the one or more arms;
- and
- wherein the adapter backing plate includes a plurality of openings to accommodate wiring from the one or more lamps to at least one ballast, mounted inside of the external housing.
A method for retrofitting a lighting system comprising:
- removing a light assembly having a first lamp and a first light reflector from an existing external housing;
- selecting a one of a plurality of backing plate adapters that is associated with the external housing;
- attaching the selected one of the backing plate adapters to a periphery of the existing external housing or an existing backing plate;
- attaching a second lamp and the first light reflector within the external housing, the first light reflector used for reflecting light from the second lamp in a direction away from the reflector;
- and
- attaching the light reflector within the external housing.
A fluorescent lighting retro-fit system for mounting at least one pin mounted fluorescent lamp and corresponding ballasts within one of a plurality of external housings of a lamp assembly, each of the external housings including a reflector mount, the retro-fit system comprising:
- a light reflector for reflecting light from the at least one fluorescent lamp in a direction away from the reflector, the light reflector including:
- a mechanical connector for attaching the fluorescent light reflector to the reflector mount;
- at least one lamp connection configured to receive the at least one fluorescent lamp;
- and
- a plurality of adapters, each configured to surround the periphery of the light reflector and each configured to mount the light reflector within a corresponding one of the plurality of external housings.
A method for retrofitting a lighting system comprising:
- removing a current diffuser from a light assembly;
- removing an HID lamp from the light assembly;
- removing a lamp socket from the light assembly;
- removing a reflector from the light assembly;
- attaching at least one ballast configured to regulate a pin mounted fluorescent lamp to a fixture of the light assembly;
- attaching incoming electrical wiring to the at least one ballast;
- bending lampholders on an adaptor baseplate to an angle substantially perpendicular from the adaptor baseplate;
- attaching wiring from the lampholders to the at least one ballast;
- inserting fly paper;
- attaching the adaptor baseplate to the light assembly;
- sliding a reflector over the adaptor baseplate and lampholders;
- inserting at least one pin mounted fluorescent lamp into the lampholders;
- and
- reattaching the diffuser.
