Abstract
A method and system providing boundary dispersion to pixel values displayed on a binary spatial light modulator to reduce temporal contouring artifacts. Pixel code values are offset from a nominal value when displayed on the SLM to disperse a large bit transition for a pulse width modulation (PWM) system. The offset value varies as a function of the pixel digital code, the pixel spatial location on the screen, and pixel temporal location in time. The set of offsets applied to pixels is varied over a repeating sequence of 2 displayed frames.

A method of displaying an image, said method comprising:
- providing a first value for an image pixel;
- offsetting said first value by a first offset value to obtain a first display value;
- displaying said first display value during a display period;
- providing a second value for said image pixel;
- offsetting said second display value by a second offset value to obtain a second display value;
- and
- displaying said second display value during another display period.
An image display system comprising:
- a logic circuit offsetting a first value for an image pixel by an offset value to form a first display value, and offsetting a second value for said image pixel by another offset value to form a second display value;
- and
- display means displaying said first display pixel value during a display period and displaying said second display value during another display period.
