Abstract
A nozzle for use in dispensing a fluid, such as water or a foaming agent to extinguish a fire, comprises a longitudinal body that comprises a plurality of helical shaped cam paths. The cam paths allow the operator of the nozzle to adjust a flow setting for the nozzle by moving a flow adjustment mechanism that is operatively associated with the cam paths.
Claims24
A nozzle for dispensing a flow of a fluid, comprising:
- a longitudinal body comprising chamber wall and a flow chamber within the chamber wall, the flow chamber having a fluid entrance end and a fluid exit end, the flow chamber including a flow deflector having a tapered entrance pin and a coaxially aligned tapered exit pin, wherein an annulus ring is located between an inside surface of the chamber wall and an exterior surface of the flow deflector, the annulus ring holding the flow deflector within the flow chamber;
- and
- a selectively adjustable slider coaxial with and interconnected to the longitudinal body, the slider including an internal taper oriented concentric with and radially exterior to at least a portion of the flow deflector, the slider selectively adjustable in a longitudinal direction for selectively modifying a separation distance between the internal taper and at least a portion of the flow deflector, wherein the longitudinal location of the slider and its internal taper, provide, at least in part, for adjusting a flow rate of the fluid through the flow chamber.
A nozzle for projecting a flow of a fluid for fighting a fire, the fluid including at least one of water and a fire suppressing agent, the nozzle comprising:
- a longitudinal body comprising a fluid entrance and a fluid exit, wherein a flow chamber extends between the fluid entrance and the fluid exit, the flow chamber comprising a flow deflector including a plurality of portions, the plurality of portions including a first conical shaped portion having a first narrow upstream end and a second larger downstream end, and a second conical shaped portion interconnected to the first conical shaped portion, the second conical shaped portion including a first large upstream end interconnected to the second larger downstream portion of the first conical section, wherein the first conical portion and second conical portion are coaxial;
- a selectively adjustable slider coaxial with and interconnected to the longitudinal body by a rotatable adjuster, the slider including an internal taper oriented radially exterior to at least a portion of the flow deflector, the slider selectively adjustable in a longitudinal direction for selectively modifying a separation distance between the internal taper and at least a portion of the flow deflector, wherein the location of the slider and its internal taper, provide, at least in part, for adjusting a flow rate of the fluid through the flow chamber;
- and
- at least one angular cam residing on an outside surface of the longitudinal body, wherein a cam follower interconnected to the rotatable adjuster rotates along the at least one cam, and wherein when the slider is adjusted the cam follower traverses along the at least one cam corresponds to a change in the flow rate of the fluid.
A nozzle for projecting a flow of a fluid, the nozzle comprising:
- a first member rotatable in one of a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction for translating at least one cam follower;
- a second member comprising a helical-shaped cam track residing on an outer surface of the second member, the at least one cam follower slidably engaging the cam track, at least a portion of the second member interconnected to the first member and located concentrically within the first member, the second member comprising a longitudinally oriented flow chamber, the flow chamber having an entrance end and an exit end, wherein the fluid flows from the entrance end to the exit end of the flow chamber;
- a flow deflector coaxially located within the flow chamber and comprising a tapered exit pin that includes an external tapered surface;
- and
- a slider concentrically located within the second member, wherein a distal end of the slider is distally blocked by a projection of the first member;
- wherein a separation distance between an internal taper of the slider and the external tapered surface changes as the first member is rotated.
A method of adjusting a flow rate of a flow of a fluid from a nozzle, comprising:
- rotating a first member in one of a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to cause at least one cam follower to move along a helical-shaped cam track residing on an outer surface of a second member, at least a portion of the second member interconnected to the first member and located concentrically within the first member, the second member comprising a flow chamber, the flow chamber having an entrance end and an exit end, wherein the fluid flows from the entrance end to the exit end of the flow chamber, wherein a flow deflector resides within the flow chamber and comprises a tapered exit pin that includes an external tapered surface, wherein a separation distance between an internal taper of a slider and the external tapered surface changes as the first member is rotated, wherein the slider is located concentrically within the second member, and wherein a distal end of the slider is distally blocked by a projection of the first member.
