Abstract
A method of operating an engine is provided. The engine includes at least one cylinder communicating with an intake manifold via an intake manifold valve and an exhaust manifold via an exhaust manifold valve, the cylinder including a piston arranged within the cylinder, wherein the piston is coupled to a crankshaft of the engine. The method comprises discontinuing combustion in the cylinder during a plurality of cycles of the engine; during the plurality of cycles, operating the exhaust manifold valve and the intake manifold valve to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold via the cylinder and adjusting a torque signature provided to the crankshaft during each cycle by the piston responsive to an operating condition.

A method of operating an engine including at least one cylinder communicating with an intake manifold via an intake manifold valve and an exhaust manifold via an exhaust manifold valve, the cylinder including a piston arranged within the cylinder, wherein the piston is coupled to a crankshaft of the engine, the method comprising:
- discontinuing combustion in the cylinder during a plurality of cycles of the engine;
- during said plurality of cycles, operating the exhaust manifold valve and the intake manifold valve to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold via the cylinder and adjusting a torque signature provided to the crankshaft during each cycle by the piston responsive to an operating condition.
A method of operating an engine including at least one cylinder communicating with an intake manifold via an intake manifold valve and an exhaust manifold via an exhaust manifold valve, and a piston moveably coupled within the cylinder, wherein the piston is coupled to a crankshaft of the engine, the method comprising:
- during a first condition, performing combustion in the cylinder for each of a plurality of cycles to provide a positive net torque to the crankshaft, and operating the intake and exhaust manifold valves to provide a net flow of gases from the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold for each of said plurality of cycles;
- during a second condition;
- discontinuing combustion in the cylinder for at least one cycle and operating at least one of the intake manifold valve and exhaust manifold valves to provide a net negative torque to the crankshaft and operating the intake and exhaust manifold valves to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold over said at least one cycle.
An engine system for a vehicle, comprising:
- a first cylinder;
- an intake manifold communicating with the first cylinder via an intake manifold valve;
- an exhaust manifold communicating with the first cylinder via an exhaust manifold valve;
- piston moveably arranged within the first cylinder;
- a crankshaft coupled to the piston;
- and
- a control system configured to control the intake manifold valve and the exhaust manifold valve;
- wherein the control system is configured to operate the exhaust manifold valve and the intake manifold valve to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold via the first cylinder and is configured to adjust a timing of a torque pulsation provided to the crankshaft by the piston responsive to an operating condition.
