Abstract
The present disclosure describes a needle guard device or system that can be used with drugs requiring reconstitution. The needle guard is preferably a passive needle guard that can be used during reconstitution without activating the safety mechanism. Following administration of the medication, the needle guard shields a user from inadvertent needle sticks by extending a protective shield over the needle.
Claims22
A syringe system for administering lyophilized drugs, the syringe system comprising
- a needle guard, the needle guard comprising
- a shield;
- a body;
- one or more trigger fingers disposed on the body or shield;
- one or more catches disposed on the body or shield, wherein the catches are configured to retain the trigger fingers in a resting, latched position until the trigger fingers are activated;
- and
- a spring, wherein the spring is configured to bias the shield from a first, retracted position to a second, extended position;
- a syringe removably coupled with the needle guard, the syringe including a port on the distal end, a cylindrical barrel, and a plunger slidably coupled with the cylindrical barrel, wherein the port is configured with respect to the needle guard to receive a component such that the interaction of the port and component will retain the shield in the first, retracted position.
A method of administering lyophilized drugs, the method comprising
- providing a syringe comprising a distal end including a port and a cylindrical barrel configured to receive a plunger and a stopper;
- coupling a needle guard with the syringe, the needle guard comprising a body being configured to receive the syringe, a shield slidable between a retracted position and an extended position, and one or more trigger fingers coupled to the body or the shield that are releasable when a radial element of the plunger contacts the trigger fingers;
- attaching a component to the port, wherein the port is configured with respect to the needle guard such that the interaction of the component and the port prevents activation of the needle guard;
- aspirating a diluent from a diluent vial;
- displacing the diluent into a medication vial comprising a medication;
- mixing the diluent and the medication in the medication vial to form a therapeutic agent;
- and
- withdrawing the therapeutic agent from the medication vial.
A method of administering lyophilized drugs, the method comprising
- providing a syringe comprising a distal end including a port and a cylindrical barrel configured to receive a plunger and a stopper, wherein the barrel is pre-filled with a diluent;
- coupling a needle guard with the syringe, the needle guard comprising a body being configured to receive the syringe, a shield slidable between a retracted position and an extended position, and trigger fingers coupled to the body or the shield that are releasable when the radial element of the plunger contacts the trigger fingers;
- attaching a component to the port, wherein the port is configured with respect to the needle guard such that the interaction of the component and the port prevents activation of the needle guard;
- displacing the diluent into a medication vial comprising a medication;
- mixing the diluent and the medication in the medication vial to form a therapeutic agent;
- and
- withdrawing the therapeutic agent from the medication vial.
A syringe system for administering lyophilized drugs, the syringe system comprising
- a needle guard, the needle guard comprising
- a shield;
- a body;
- one or more trigger fingers disposed on the body or shield;
- one or more catches disposed on the body or shield, wherein the catches are configured to retain the trigger fingers in a resting, latched position until the trigger fingers are activated;
- and
- a spring, wherein the spring is configured to bias the shield from a first, retracted position to a second, extended position;
- a syringe removably coupled with the needle guard, the syringe including a port on the distal end, a cylindrical barrel, and a plunger slidably coupled with the cylindrical barrel, wherein the port is configured to receive a component such that the interaction of the port and component will retain the shield in the first, retracted position;
- and
- a back plate removably coupled with the proximal portion of the needle guard, the back plate including an aperture configured to receive a stem of the plunger and to prevent removal of the plunger from the syringe barrel.
