Abstract
An intramedullary bone repair system and device for insertion into a bone extending along a longitudinal axis of the bone and for use with a plurality of screws. The bone repair device includes an elongate shaft and a head pivotally coupled to the proximal end of the shaft. A locking assembly is carried by the proximal end of the shaft and the head for rigidly coupling the shaft and the head together when the shaft and the head have been desirably positioned within the bone. The shaft and the head are provided with a plurality of threaded bores for receiving the plurality of screws to affix the shaft and head within the bone. A method for repair of a bone fracture using the bone repair device is also disclosed.
Claims33
An intramedullary bone repair device for insertion into a bone extending along a longitudinal axis and for use with a plurality of screws comprising an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, a head pivotally coupled to the proximal end of the shaft, the distal end of the shaft having a tapered end for facilitating insertion of the shaft along the longitudinal axis of the bone, and a locking assembly carried by the proximal end of the shaft and the head for rigidly coupling the shaft and the head together when the shaft and head have been desirably positioned within the bone, the shaft and the head being provided with a plurality of threaded bores for receiving the plurality of screws to affix the shaft and head within the bone.
An intramedullary bone repair device comprising a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end of the shaft having a tapered end for facilitating insertion of the shaft along the center of the bone, and a plate-like head attached to the proximal end of the shaft, the head being provided with a plurality of threaded bores for receiving a plurality of screws to affix the plate-like head to the bone.
An intramedullary bone repair device for insertion into a bone extending along a longitudinal axis and for use with a plurality of screws comprising an elongate body adapted for placement within the bone, the elongate body having a tapered distal end for facilitating insertion of the elongate body along the longitudinal axis of the bone and being provided with plurality of threaded bores extending parallel to each other in a nonlinear array for receiving the plurality of screws to affix the elongate body within the bone.
An intramedullary bone repair device for insertion into a bone extending along a longitudinal axis and for use with a plurality of screws comprising an elongate body adapted for placement within the bone, the elongate body having a tapered distal end for facilitating insertion of the elongate body along the longitudinal axis of the bone and being provided with a planar surface through which a plurality of threaded bores extend in a nonlinear array for receiving the plurality of screws to affix the elongate body within the bone.
An intramedullary bone repair device for insertion into a bone extending along a longitudinal axis and for use with an externally-threaded screw having a tapered threaded portion comprising an elongate body adapted for placement within the bone, the elongate body having a tapered distal end for facilitating insertion of the elongate body along the longitudinal axis of the bone and having an external surface, an internal thread extending inwardly from the external surface for forming an internal bore, the internal thread having an inner diameter that tapers inwardly from the external surface.
A method for repairing a fractured bone having a length with an intramedullary bone repair device having a head and a shaft, comprising pivoting the head relative to the shaft so that the head is inclined relative to the shaft, inserting the shaft into the bone so that the shaft extends down a portion of the length of the bone, straightening the head relative to the shaft so that the head is inserted into the bone and securing the head and shaft within the bone.
A method of repairing a bone fractured through a joint so as to have a plurality of bone segments, comprising inserting an elongate body having an enlarged head and an elongate shaft extending distally of the head completely into the bone so that the enlarged head is in the vicinity of the joint and attaching the plurality of bone segments to the head of the elongate body.
