## Abstract

Methods, systems and computer program products to implement extensions of the Media Transport Protocol (MTP) are provided herein. The methods include opening a session between an initiator and a responder, exchanging one or more of device and system information and sending one of an operation or event based on media player application features. The operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter. In an embodiment, the extensions enable the initiator and responder to manage connections efficiently between devices, send media player application information to a media player device, exchange device and system information, manage digital rights, monitor system security and specify properties within one or more extensions of MTP. These extensions may be in the form of one or more of an operation, an event, a dataset or property code.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for exchanging system information between an initiator and a responder operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:
opening a session between an initiator and a responder; and
sending or receiving one of an operation or event related to system information;
wherein said operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the protocol is a Media Transport Protocol (MTP).

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an operation from the initiator to the responder requesting responder system information.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an operation from the initiator to the responder with initiator system information dataset that includes one or more of protocol in use, device descriptor, driver vendor number, driver vendor identification, operating system name, operating system revision level, operating system patch information, hardware information, internationalization, media player name and media player version.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an identity checking operation from the responder to the initiator to determine whether the initiator can identify the responder.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the operation includes a dataset that has initiator information as stored on the responder.

### Claim 7

A method for exchanging media player information between an initiator and a responder operating under a Media Transport Protocol (MTP), comprising:
opening a session between an initiator and a responder;
exchanging one or more of device and system information; and
sending one of an operation or event based on media player application features;
wherein said operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an event from the responder to the initiator requesting the initiator to provide media player application information.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein in response to the event, the initiator sends an operation to the responder to provide media player application information.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the operation includes a dataset that has one or more of manufacturer name, version identifier, serial number, model number, PC Media player friendly name, supported operations and supported events.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an event from the responder to the initiator to reset a media player application running on the initiator.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an event from the responder to the initiator in response to a firmware upgrade of the responder.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the event causes the initiator to close all open sessions, perform a soft reset of its MTP stack and query the responder for transport capabilities including one or more of Universal Serial Bus (USB) serial numbers, product identification numbers, model number, product name and changed system capabilities of the responder as a result of the firmware upgrade of the responder.

### Claim 14

A method for efficiently managing sessions between an initiator and a responder operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:
a) opening a session between an initiator and a responder; and
b) sending one or more of initiator system information and media player application information to the responder;
c) requesting one or more of device information, system information, digital rights management information from the responder;
d) requesting responder to perform one or more of system integrity check and an object integrity check; and
e) conducting multiple transaction with the responder without repeating steps a)-d) at the start of each transaction;
wherein each transaction comprises one of an operation or an event; and
wherein said operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the protocol is a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP).
