## Abstract

A recommendation system and method uses data structured according to an indicator-based recommendation paradigm. Items to be considered for recommendation are stored in a text retrieval system, along with associated meta-data such as title and description. To these conventional characteristics are added additional characteristics known as indicators which are derived from an analysis of the usage of the system by users. This indicator-based system provides a more robust recommendation system that is able to capture a greater depth and variety of real-world relationships among items, and is able to handle p-adic systems and systems with ternary or higher relations.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for generating recommendations, comprising:
storing a plurality of items;
for each item, storing metadata;
analyzing behavior of at least one user with respect to at least one of the stored items;
for at least one of the stored items:
deriving indicators from the observed behavior; and
storing the derived indicators; and
generating at least one recommendation based on the stored indicators.

### Claim 2

A system for generating recommendations, comprising:
a storage device, for storing a plurality of items and, for each item, storing metadata;
a behavior analysis module, for analyzing behavior of at least one user with respect to at least one of the stored items;
an indicator construction system, for, for at least one of the stored items:
deriving indicators from the observed behavior;
a storage device, for, for at least one of the stored items storing the derived indicators; and
a recommendation generator, for generating at least one recommendation based on the stored indicators.

### Claim 3

A computer program product for generating recommendations, comprising:
a computer-readable medium; and
computer program code, encoded on the medium, for:
storing a plurality of items;
for each item, storing metadata;
analyzing behavior of at least one user with respect to at least one of the stored items;
for at least one of the stored items:
deriving indicators from the observed behavior; and
storing the derived indicators; and
generating at least one recommendation based on the stored indicators.
