## Abstract

The invention relates to VLAN numbering in access networks.

## Claims

### Claim 1

Network terminating device in an access network supporting virtual local area networks on the network side and on the subscriber side, the virtual local area network numbering on the network side comprising port numbers and service numbers, the virtual local area network numbering on the subscriber side comprising service numbers.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

Device according to claim 1, the device delivering all services from one specific service provider to the subscriber through one specific physical port on subscriber side, said physical port number corresponding with said port number in said virtual local area network numbering on the network side.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

Device according to claim 2, the device translating the virtual local area network numbering in the direction of the subscriber by stripping the port number and passing through the service number and the device translating the virtual local area network numbering in the direction of the network by adding said port number that corresponds with the connected physical port number to the service number in the virtual local area network numbering on the network side.

### Claim 4

Network terminating device in an access network supporting virtual local area networks on the network side and untagged Ethernet on the subscriber side, the virtual local area network numbering on the network side comprising port numbers and service numbers, and a bit of said service numbers on the network side being reserved to indicate a relation to untagged Ethernet traffic on the subscriber side of the device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

Device according to claim 4, in which bit 7 of the service numbers on the network side is reserved to indicate a relation to untagged Ethernet traffic on the subscriber side of the device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

Device according to claim 4, the device delivering all services from one specific service provider to the subscriber through one specific physical port on subscriber side, said physical port number corresponding with the port number in the virtual local area network numbering on the network side.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

Device according to claim 1, supporting a division of the service numbers in the VLAN numbering into two or more blocks.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

Device according to claim 7, wherein one or more service number blocks are used for traffic separation.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

Device according to claim 8, wherein traffic separation is used to distinguish different classes of service.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

Device according to claim 9, wherein the device uses a different traffic queue for each class of service, said traffic queues being handled by the device with different priorities.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

Device according to claim 10, supporting quality of service in the direction from subscriber to network.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

Device according to claim 10, supporting quality of service in the direction from network to subscriber.
