Abstract
This invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid fragment encoding an aspartate kinase. The invention also relates to the construction of a chimeric gene encoding all or a portion of the aspartate kinase, in sense or antisense orientation, wherein expression of the chimeric gene results in production of altered levels of the aspartate kinase in a transformed host cell.

1-27. (canceled)
An isolated polynucleotide comprising:
- (a) a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having an Aspartate kinase activity with reduced sensitivity to lysine, wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 90% sequence identity, based on the Clustal V method of alignment, when compared to SEQ ID NO:8 comprising a leucine for serine substitution at position 441;
- (b) a complement of the nucleotide sequence, wherein the complement and the nucleotide sequence consist of the same number of nucleotides and are 100% complementary.
An isolated polynucleotide comprising:
- a) nucleic acid fragment having a mutation in the sequence of SEQ ID NO :7 that encodes a mutant aspartate kinase with reduced sensitivity to lysine when compared to a wild type aspartate kinase;
- b) a complement of the nucleotide sequence, wherein the complement and the nucleotide sequence consist of the same number of nucleotides and are 100% complementary.
