Abstract
Methods for identifying sunflower plants or germplasm that display resistance, improved resistance, or susceptibility to Orobanche cumana are provided. Sunflower plants or germplasm that are resistant or have improved resistance to Orobanche cumana are created. The plants or germplasm produced by the methods of the invention are also an aspect of the invention.
Claims20
A method of identifying a sunflower plant or sunflower germplasm having a phenotype of System II resistance to Orobanche, comprising detecting in a sunflower plant or sunflower germplasm at least one polymorphism of a marker locus that is associated with said phenotype, wherein the marker locus is represented by SEQ ID NO:
- 2 or displays a recombination frequency of less than 10% with respect to the marker locus of SEQ ID NO:
- 2.
A method for identifying nucleic acid as an indicator of System II resistance to Orobanche in sunflower, the method comprising:
- exposing sunflower nucleic acid to a molecular marker selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 or 2.
An isolated and purified genetic marker associated with System II resistance to Orobanche and mapping to linkage group 4 of Helianthus annuus, said marker comprising the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 2 or a variant which retains at least one of the polymorphisms of SEQ ID NO:
- 2 relative to SEQ ID NO:
- 1.
A method of depleting existing Orobanche seed banks in the soil profile, comprising growing plants comprising the System II resistance allele of SEQ ID NO:
- 2 or a derivative allele comprising at least one polymorphism identified herein with respect to SEQ ID NO:
- 1.
A method of identifying genes or gene clusters in the sunflower genome giving rise to Orobanche resistance, comprising amplifying a chromosomal region identified by hybridization to a primer selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:
- 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10.
