Abstract
Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for backing-up and restoring files including files referenced with multiple file names. Files to backup are determined. A determination is made from the files to backup files referenced with multiple names. An entry is created for each file to backup in a backup directory indicating file attributes and each name used to reference the file. The determined files and the backup directory are backed-up.

A method, comprising:
- determining files to backup;
- determining from the files to backup files referenced with multiple names;
- creating for each file to backup an entry in a backup directory indicating file attributes and each name used to reference the file;
- and
- backing-up the determined files and the backup directory.
A system, comprising:
- a processor;
- a file system including information on files;
- and
- a backup client program executed by the processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:
- determining files to backup;
- determining from the files to backup files referenced with multiple names;
- creating for each file to backup an entry in a backup directory indicating file attributes and each name used to reference the file;
- and
- backing-up the determined files and the backup directory.
An article of manufacture implementing code for performing backup operations with respect to files indicated in a file system that are stored in a storage device, wherein the code is enabled to cause operations, the operations comprising:
- determining files to backup;
- determining from the files to backup files referenced with multiple names;
- creating for each file to backup an entry in a backup directory indicating file attributes and each name used to reference the file;
- and
- backing-up the determined files and the backup directory.
