Electronic device having diagnostic mechanism

A diagnostic component for an electronic device that is configured to be received by a computing device, the electronic device comprises:

• a means for physically interfacing with a computer hardware interface associated with the computing device, said computing device having an operating system;
• a means for generating a first signal that indicates the result of a first operation that tests communications with a device driver that is related to the electronic device;
• a means for generating a second signal that indicates the result of a second operation that tests the communications between the electronic device and the operating system of the computing device;
• a means for presenting the first signal on the electronic device;
• and
• a means for presenting the second signal on the electronic device.

A method for diagnosing an electronic device having a form factor that physically interfaces with a computer hardware interface associated with a computing device, said method comprising:

• indicating the result of a first operation with a first signal wherein the first operation tests communications with a device driver that is related to the electronic device;
• indicating the result of a second operation with a second signal wherein the second operations tests communications between the electronic device and the operating system of the computing device;
• and
• generating diagnostic information with said first signal and said second signal.
