Abstract
An apparatus and method for programming a universal remote control. The method includes receiving a transmitted signal of unknown modulation technique from a native remote control and characterizing the received signal in parameters of a pre-determined modulation technique.

A home entertainment system, comprising:
- an audio head unit, including a microprocessor;
- a programmable universal remote control, for controlling a plurality of home entertainment devices and the audio head unit;
- and
- instructions executable by the audio head unit microprocessor for programming the universal remote control.
A home entertainment system, comprising:
- a universal remote control, pre-programmed to control a home entertainment device;
- and
- a programmer, to program the universal remote control to control other home entertainment devices.
A microprocessor readable medium encoding instructions to cause a microprocessor to program a universal remote control to control a plurality of devices, wherein the instructions are executable by an audio head unit microprocessor.
