Abstract
A method, apparatus, and system that provides a holographic layer as a micro-lens array and/or a color filter array in an imager. The method of writing the holographic layer results in overlapping areas in the hologram for corresponding adjacent pixels in the imager which increases collection of light at the pixels, thereby increasing quantum efficiency.

An imaging device, comprising:
- an array of pixels;
- and
- an optical holographic layer formed over the pixel array to focus an incoming image onto the pixels of the array.
A CMOS imaging device, comprising:
- a pixel array;
- a sample and hold circuit for storing a reset signal and an image signal produced by the pixel array;
- an amplifier for subtracting the reset signal from the image signal;
- a digitizer for receiving the output of the amplifier;
- and
- an image processor for receiving the output of the digitizer, wherein an optical holographic layer is formed over the pixel array.
An imaging device, comprising:
- a pixel array;
- and
- an optical holographic layer formed over the pixel array and in an optical path of input radiation to focus an incoming image onto pixels of the array.
A digital camera system, comprising:
- a lens;
- and
- an imaging device positioned to receive an image through the lens, the imaging device comprising:
- a pixel array for capturing an image;
- an optical holographic layer formed over the pixel array for focusing an image onto respective pixel photosensors of the array;
- a readout circuit for reading out and digitizing signals from pixels of the array;
- and
- an image processing unit for processing readout digitized pixel signals.
A method of recording an optical holographic layer in an imaging device, comprising:
- projecting an object beam into an optical system;
- projecting a reference beam into the optical system;
- producing interference between the reference beam and the object beam to create interference beams of light;
- and
- projecting the interference beams onto the holographic layer to form holographic patterns to focus and color separate input radiation onto photosensors of pixels in a pixel array.
A method of capturing an object comprising:
- receiving an image through a lens;
- passing the image received through an optical holographic layer formed over a pixel array, the optical holographic layer focusing and color separating the image onto pixels of the array;
- and
- capturing the image with the pixel array.
