Abstract
A digital work may be annotated using an eBook reader device. Upon receiving an annotation relating to a specific portion of the digital work, an invariant location reference identifier corresponding to the specified portion of the digital work may be appended to the annotation. The annotation may then be stored in association with the digital work for later reference. In some instances, an annotation may be presented on an eBook reader device upon receipt of a valid authorization credential granting access to the annotation.
Claims33
A method of annotating a digital work implemented at least partially by an eBook reader device, the method comprising:
- receiving an annotation relating to a specified portion of the digital work;
- appending an invariant location reference identifier corresponding to the specified portion of the digital work to the annotation;
- and
- storing the annotation in association with the digital work.
A method of presenting an annotation on an eBook reader device, the method comprising:
- receiving an annotation of a digital work;
- storing the annotation in association with the digital work;
- receiving an authorization credential granting access to the annotation;
- and
- if the authorization credential is valid, presenting the annotation of the digital work on the eBook reader device in context with regard to the digital work.
An eBook reader device comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- memory in communication with the processor, the memory comprising:
- a digital work,
- an annotation associated with the digital work, the annotation being separate from the digital work, such that the digital work is unaltered by the provision of the annotation;
- and
- a plurality of unique invariant location reference identifiers,
- wherein the digital work is partitioned into a plurality of segments and each segment of the digital work is assigned one of the invariant location reference identifiers, such that each invariant location reference identifier is uniquely assigned to a corresponding segment of the digital work.
