Abstract
The present invention is a self-retaining laryngoscope composed of a palate brace or blade, a slider, and a tongue blade. The angulated tongue blade puts less force on the blade, reduces trauma, and is not conducive for mechanical failure. The slider interacts with the tongue blade by widening the opening of the mouth, and acts as a bite block. The fenestrated palate blade provides an unobstructed view of the vocal cords during intubation, and allows removal of the laryngoscope over the endotracheal tube without displacing it. The result is a laryngoscope that requires only one hand to use properly, and has superior retraction due to its shape.
Claims4
An improved laryngoscope comprising:
- a tongue blade member having a proximal tongue blade end and a distal tongue blade end, and having a partially, substantially inverted pyramidal shape;
- a palate blade member having a proximal palate blade handle segment and a distal palate blade segment, with a palate blade pivot point residing therebetween;
- and
- a slider member having a palate blade distal end and an opposite slider member proximal end, said slider member having a tongue blade slider member and a palate blade slider member, said tongue blade slider member and said palate blade slider member being configured and mutually engaged for slidably moving relative to each other along substantially parallel axes whereby said slider member is transitionable between lengthened and shortened slider member configurations;
- said slider member having slider member securing means for reversibly securing said tongue blade slider member relative to said palate blade slider member;
- said proximal tongue blade end of said tongue blade member being attached to said tongue blade slider member;
- said palate blade being pivotally attached at its said palate blade pivot point to said palate blade slider member, said palate blade having associated with it palate blade securing means for reversibly securing said palate blade member in one or more orientations relative to said palate blade slider member.
An improved laryngoscope comprising:
- a tongue blade member having a proximal tongue blade end and a distal tongue blade end;
- a palate blade member having a proximal palate blade handle segment and a distal palate blade segment, with a palate blade pivot point residing therebetween;
- and
- blade member support means to which is attached said tongue blade member and said palate blade member at its said palate blade pivot point;
- said palate blade having associated with it palate blade securing means for reversibly securing said palate blade member in one or more orientations relative to said plate member support means
