Abstract
An apparatus for desalinating seawater to yield desalinated water and a concentrate features a structure positioned on the surface of a body of seawater; a water desalination system installed on the structure, a water intake system installed on the structure; a concentrate discharge system installed on the structure and a device for removing the desalinated water per day from the apparatus so that it can be transferred to a land-based facility. The apparatus can be operated to intake seawater into the desalination system where it is separated into a concentrate and desalinated water. The concentrate can be discharged into the body of water and the desalinated water can be transported to a land-based facility for distribution.
Claims5
An apparatus for desalinating seawater to yield desalinated water and a:
- concentrate, the apparatus comprising:
- a structure positioned on the surface of a body of seawater;
- a water desalination system installed on the structure and capable of producing a concentrate and between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day;
- a water intake system installed on the structure and comprising a device for taking up seawater from the body of seawater and supplying the taken-up seawater to the desalination system;
- a concentrate discharge system installed on the structure and capable of receiving the concentrate produced by the desalination system and discharging the concentrate into the body of water;
- a desalinated water transfer system in communication with the structure and comprising a device for removing the between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day produced by the desalination system from the structure so that the desalinated water can be transferred to a land-based facility;
- and a component installed on or in communication with the structure, the component being selected from the group consisting of:
- an alternative power source that provides power to the water desalination system and does not combust a fossil fuel;
- and a fossil-fuel combusting power generation device source that provides power to the water desalination system and is coupled to a pollution reduction device that can reduce the amount of at least one pollutant contained in the exhaust produced by the fossil-fuel combusting power generation device.
An apparatus for desalinating seawater to yield desalinated water and a concentrate, the apparatus comprising:
- a structure positioned on the surface of a body of seawater;
- a water desalination system installed on the structure and capable of producing a concentrate and between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day;
- a water intake system installed on the structure and comprising a device for taking up seawater from the body of seawater and supplying the taken-up seawater to the desalination system;
- a concentrate discharge system installed on the structure and capable of receiving the concentrate produced by the desalination system and discharging the concentrate into the body of water;
- a desalinated water transfer system in communication with the structure and comprising a device for removing the between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day produced by the desalination system from the structure so that it can be transferred to a land-based facility;
- and a component installed on or in communication with the structure, the component being selected from the group consisting of:
- a vibration control device and a noise abatement device.
An apparatus for desalinating seawater to yield desalinated water and a concentrate, the apparatus comprising:
- a structure positioned on the surface of a body of seawater;
- a water desalination system installed on the structure and capable of producing a concentrate and between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day;
- a water intake system installed on the structure and comprising a device for taking up seawater from the body of seawater and supplying the taken-up seawater to the desalination system;
- a concentrate discharge system installed on the structure and configured to receive the concentrate produced by the desalination system and discharge the concentrate into the body of water at a depth no more than about 40 meters;
- and a desalinated water transfer system in communication with the structure and comprising a device for removing the between 5,000 and 450,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day produced by the desalination system from the structure so that it can be transferred to a land-based facility.
