Abstract
The present invention is a motion compensation system for a visual prosthesis to adapt a visual image to movement of a user's eyes and head. The system includes a camera providing a video signal, an eye movement tracking device, a head movement tracking device, and a video processing unit processing the video signal and correcting the video signal for eye and head movement. The corrected video signal is sent to an implanted neural stimulator including electrodes stimulating visual neurons to create a perception of the video image.
Claims18
A visual prosthesis comprising:
- a video receiver for receiving a video image and converting said video image to a video signal;
- a video processing unit, coupled to said video receiver and processing said video signal;
- an eye movement tracking device providing eye movement data to said video processing unit, whereby said video processing unit corrects said video signal for eye movement;
- an external communication unit, coupled to said video processing unit, transmitting said video signal;
- an internal communication unit implanted within a living body receiving said video signal;
- a plurality of electrodes driven by said internal communication unit and stimulating visual neurons to create a perception of said video image.
A method for restoring vision in a patient with impaired vision comprising the steps of:
- receiving a video image with an external imaging device;
- converting said video image to a video signal suitable for visual stimulation;
- tracking eye movement;
- transmitting said video signal into a living body;
- and
- stimulating visual neurons in accordance with said video signal.
