Abstract
A spinning impingement multiphase contacting device and method for heat or mass transfer are disclosed. A first fluid, from which the transfer is to occur, is caused to impinge and be entrained in a spinning permeable element, creating a highly dispersed phase. The highly dispersed phase contacts the second fluid to cause the desired heat or mass transfer.
Claims28
1-33. (canceled)
A method for deoxygenating water, comprising:
- introducing the water into the interior region of a rotatable permeable element, the rotatable permeable element, as a whole, having a porosity of less than about 40 pores per inch the rotatable permeable element defining an inner wall and an interior region, the rotatable permeable element rotating at a speed such that the tangential velocity at its inner wall is at least about 18 meters per second;
- and
- contacting the water inside the rotatable permeable element with steam, thereby causing transfer of oxygen from the water to the steam.
35-36. (canceled)
The method of claim 36, wherein the product water contains less than about 500 parts per trillion oxygen content.

42-46. (canceled)
A process for deoxygenating water comprising:
- rotating a rotatable permeable element disposed within a chamber, the rotatable permeable element, as a whole, having a porosity of less than about 40 pores per inch, the rotatable permeable element defining an inner wall and an interior region, the rotatable permeable element rotating at a speed such that the tangential velocity at its inner wall is at least about 18 meters per second;
- introducing water into the interior region of the permeable element, thereby causing the water to pass through the permeable element and be collected by the chamber, and
- causing steam to flow through the permeable element from its exterior to its interior region, thereby causing transfer of oxygen from the water to the steam.
A process for accomplishing heat and/or mass transfer between a liquid feed and a second fluid or for extracting a volatile component from the liquid feed, the process comprising:
- a) rotating a rotatable permeable element disposed within a chamber so that liquid feed introduced into the interior of the element permeates to the exterior of the element and is collected by the chamber, the rotatable permeable element, as a whole, having a porosity of less than about 40 pores per inch, the rotatable permeable element defining an inner wall and an interior region, the rotatable permeable element rotating at a speed such that the tangential velocity at its inner wall is at least about 18 meters per second;
- b) withdrawing liquid feed collected by the chamber, and
- c) withdrawing from the interior of the rotatable permeable element a second fluid which is introduced into the chamber from the exterior of the rotatable permeable element, or which is a volatile component recovered from the liquid feed.
