Abstract
A damper is shown for damping the movements of a spring. The spring is housed within the damper. The side walls of the damper can have cutouts or hinge members resulting in flexure of the side walls when the spring is compressed or released. A steel band can be housed on the outside surface of the side walls providing biasing of the inside of the side walls against the outside of the spring.
Claims12
A device for damping oscillations in a spring of an engine valve, the device comprising:
- a cup shaped damper having a top edge and a bottom, an inner surface and an outer surface defining a side wall, an axis in the center of the damper, the side wall attached to the bottom with hinge members;
- a hole in the bottom, the hole centered on the axis;
- a plurality of T-shaped slots in the side wall, the T-shaped slots having a vertical component and a circumferential component, the vertical component starting near the bottom and extending to and open at the top edge, the circumferential component adjacent to the bottom extending from one hinge member to another hinge member and approximately centered on the vertical component;
- two pair of vertical lips on each vertical component of the slot, one lip located on each side of the vertical component of the slot near the top edge and one lip located on each side of the vertical component of the slot near the bottom, the lips bent away from the axis;
- a platform extending from near the inner surface toward the axis terminating at a step;
- the step attached to a cylinder, the cylinder extending towards the top edge, the step and cylinder centered on the axis;
- a seal affixed to the cylinder near the top edge, the seal for sealing the stem of the valve;
- a band located on the outer surface of the side walls, the band located between the vertical lips;
- and
- the band providing radial tension to the outer surface of the damper such that the inner surface of the damper contacts the spring and the spring oscillations are damped.

- a hole in the bottom, the hole centered on the axis;
- a plurality of T-shaped slots in the side walls, the T-shaped slots having a vertical component and a circumferential component, the vertical component starting near the bottom and extending to and open at the top edge, the circumferential component located near the bottom and approximately centered on the vertical component;
- a platform extending from the inner surface of the side wall toward the axis terminating at a step;
- the step attached to a cylinder, the cylinder extending toward the top edge;
- the step and cylinder centered on the axis;
- a seal affixed to the cylinder near the top, the seal for sealing the stem of the valve;
- and
- the side walls providing radial tension to the spring such that the inner surface contacts the outer surface of the spring and the spring oscillations are damped.
A device for damping oscillations in a spring and providing a seal for a valve stem, the device comprising:
- a cup shaped damper having a top edge and a bottom and an inner surface and an outer surface defining a side wall, an axis in the center of the damper, a hole in the bottom centered on the axis;
- one T-shaped slot having a vertical component and a circumferential component, the vertical component extending from near the bottom and extending to and open at the top edge, the circumferential component located adjacent to the bottom and approximately centered on the vertical component;
- the T-shaped slot forming the side wall, the side wall attached to the bottom with a hinge member;
- a stem seal centered on the axis, the stem seal attached to the bottom and extending from near the bottom toward the top edge, the stem seal for sealing the damper and the valve stem;
- a platform located between the inner surface and the stem seal, the platform perpendicular to the axis;
- one vertical lip located on each edge of the vertical component and extending from near the bottom to the top edge, the vertical lip bent away from the axis;
- and
- the side walls biased towards the axis such that the inner surface of the damper contacts the spring to dampen spring oscillations.
A device for damping oscillations in a spring, the device comprising:
