Abstract
An apparatus for cutting a plastic blow molded body ejected from a blow mold, the apparatus includes spaced holders rotatable about a common axis. Each holder receives an end of a plastic body. A first drive rotates the holders about the axis. A second drive moves the holders and plastic body against a trim knife to cut the body. The holders start and stop rotation with the body at a predetermined orientation with respect to the common axis.
Claims37
An apparatus for cutting a plastic blow molded body ejected from a blow mold, the apparatus comprising:
- first and second holders spaced away from each other, the holders rotatable about a common axis, each holder configured to receive a respective end of a plastic body;
- a first drive connected to the holders for rotating the holders about the common axis, the first drive configured to start and stop rotation with the plastic body in a predetermined start orientation and a predetermined stop orientation with respect to the axis;
- a trim knife for cutting the plastic body;
- and
- a second drive for moving the rotating holders relative to the trim knife, the trim knife oriented to engage the rotating body between the holders for cutting the plastic body.
A method of cutting a plastic body ejected from a blow mold, the body having opposite end portions, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) receiving each end portion of the body in a respective first and second holder;
- (b) rotating the holders about a common axis to rotate the body in the holders about the axis;
- (c) relatively moving the rotating body past a trim knife, the trim knife configured to engage the rotating body between the holders and cut the body;
- and
- (d) stopping the rotating holders with the body in the holders held at a predetermined orientation with respect to the axis.
