Abstract
A combustion apparatus for the burning of solid fuel using a plurality of secondary combustion zones is disclosed. The combustion apparatus includes primary and secondary air inlets, an inclined hearth and a unique second air source which washes up a window in the combustion apparatus creating a floating flame effect and rendering the window self-cleaning. A series of baffles define a secondary combustion pathway which optimizes secondary combustion of exhaust gasses and particulate matter. Coaxial rear and top direct venting apparatus are also disclosed. The combustion apparatus provided combusts a wide range of solid fuel at a high level of efficiency.
Claims45
A combustion apparatus for solid fuel comprising:
- a) a firebox defined by a base, a top wall, a front wall, a rear wall and two side walls extending between said base and said top wall;
- b) an opening in said front wall to enable loading of said solid fuel;
- c) a primary air inlet for delivering primary combustion air into said firebox;
- d) at least one secondary air inlet for delivering secondary air into said combustion apparatus;
- e) at least one baffle disposed in said firebox, substantially spanning the distance between said side walls, extending forward from said rear wall and delineating a primary combustion zone in said firebox from a secondary combustion pathway;
- f) wherein said baffle includes an edge delineating an opening to a vent structure adapted to receive exhaust gasses and particles of combustion.
A combustion apparatus for solid fuel having a front window, a firebox hearth which slopes upwards from a rear area of said combustion apparatus towards a front area of said combustion apparatus and includes a source of air ingress below said window, such that during combustion said air ingress provides air for primary and secondary combustion, washes up said window, and is adapted to cause the flames to appear to float above said fuel
A method of combusting fuel comprising the steps of:
- a) introducing primary air into a stove;
- b) igniting said fuel thereby initiating primary combustion;
- c) introducing air from at least one additional source into said stove;
- d) removing exhaust from said combustion via a secondary combustion pathway adapted to support ongoing combustion;
- e) introducing air at a plurality additional sources along said secondary combustion pathway thereby supporting said ongoing combustion at a series of successive secondary combustion zones;
- such that the temperature of said combustion is higher at each successive said secondary combustion zone.
