Abstract
A s,s′-bis-(α,α′-disubstituted-α″-acetic acid)-trithiocarbonate and derivatives thereof can be used as an initiator, chain transfer agent, or terminator for polymerization of monomers such as free radical polymerizable monomers. Homopolymers, copolymers, and the like as well as block copolymers can be made utilizing the trithiocarbonate compound such as in a living free radical polymerization as well as to form telechelic polymers.

A method for forming an s,s′-bis-(α,α′-disubstituted-α″-acetic acid)-trithiocarbonate compound, comprising the steps of:
- reacting carbon disulfide and a base to form an intermediate trithio structure;
- reacting said trithio intermediate with a 1,1-disubstituted-2,2-dihaloepoxide, or with the reaction product of a haloform and a ketone in the presence of said base, to form a dicarboxylated salt, and acidifying said dicarboxylated salt to form said s,s′-bis-(α,α′-disubstituted-α″-acetic acid)-trithiocarbonate.
