Abstract
A technique to verify firmware. One embodiment of the invention uses a processor's micro-code to verify a system's firmware, such that the firmware can be included in a trusted chain of code along with the operating system.
Claims30
A system comprising:
- a first memory to store firmware;
- a processor to perform micro-code to cause the integrity of the firmware to be verified.
A machine-readable medium having stored therein a set of instructions, which if executed by a machine cause the machine to perform a method comprising:
- locating a firmware interface table (FIT) entry containing an address of an authenticated code (AC) module;
- authenticating the AC module;
- performing a hashing function to authenticate a firmware module;
- storing the result of the hashing function;
- booting an operating system if the FIT is successfully located, the AC module is successfully authenticated, and the firmware is successfully authenticated.
2 more elements
A processor comprising:
- micro-code to cause the integrity of a firmware module corresponding to a computer system to be verified.
A method comprising:
- turning on a computer system in which micro-code corresponding to a processor within the computer system is responsible for causing the computer system's firmware to be verified;
- using the computer system.
