Abstract
The present invention provides steam reforming catalyst compositions containing Pd and Zn, and methods of steam reforming alcohols over a catalyst. Surprisingly superior results and properties of the present invention, including low temperature activity and/or low carbon monoxide output, are also described. Methods of making a steam reforming catalyst are also provided.
Claims10
1-11. (canceled)
A method of reforming an alcohol, comprising:
- contacting a process stream comprising alcohol and water with the catalyst of claim 1 at a temperature in the range of 200 to 400° C. to form a product stream, and directly contacting the first product stream with a methanation catalyst at a temperature of 220 to 270° C. or less to produce a second product stream comprising H2 in a H2:CO ratio of 70:1 or more, wherein the process stream passes from the reforming catalyst to the methanation catalyst without any intervening separation step.
A method of making an alcohol steam reforming catalyst, comprising:
- heating an aqueous solution comprising zinc nitrate to increase the concentration of zinc in excess of the concentration that would be dissolved at room temperature;
- forming an aqueous solution containing dissolved Pd and Zn;
- and
- coprecipitating the Pd and Zn on an oxide support.
