Abstract
A data network telephony (DNT) wireless communication system has a base station connected to a DNT-capable data network and to a plurality of wireless transceivers, each transceiver transmitting to a distinct area, the base station adapted to operate the transceivers by a two-way, narrow-band, multiple-channel, real-time duplex radio protocol, and a plurality of portable computer-enhanced client communicator units, including microphone and speaker apparatus, each assigned a unique address and adapted to communicate with the base station via the transceivers by the two-way real-time radio protocol and to process DNT calls. The wireless system operates as a carrier-sense multiple access system with collision detection (CSMA/CD).

A data network telephony (DNT) system, comprising:
- at least one wireless transceiver connected to a DNT-capable data network via at least one router, said transceiver transmitting to a distinct area, said transceiver being operated by a two-way, multiple-channel, duplex radio protocol;
- and
- at least one portable computer-enhanced communicator unit assigned an address and adapted to communicate with the at least one wireless transceiver by the two-way radio protocol, and to process DNT communications;
- wherein the router maintains at least one routing table listing an address of a communicator operating in the area of a connected transceiver, and the routing table is updated as a communicator moves from one area to another.
A data network telephony (DNT) system, comprising:
- a first wireless transceiver connected to a DNT-capable data network via at least one router, said first transceiver transmitting to a distinct first area, said first transceiver being operated by a two-way, multiple-channel, duplex radio protocol;
- a second wireless transceiver connected to said DNT-capable data network via said at least one router, said second transceiver transmitting to a distinct second area, said second transceiver being operated by said two-way, multiple-channel, duplex radio protocol;
- and
- at least one portable, computer-enhanced communicator unit assigned an address and enabled to communicate with either the first or the second wireless transceiver by the two-way radio protocol and to process DNT communications;
- wherein the at least one router maintains at least one routing table associating said assigned address of said communicator unit with the first area where the communicator unit is operating, and upon determination that the communicator unit has moved or will move to the second area, updates the at least one routing table either before, during or after the move to the second area is accomplished.
A data network telephony (DNT) system, comprising:
- a first wireless transceiver connected to a DNT-capable data network via at least one router, said first transceiver transmitting to a distinct first area;
- a second wireless transceiver connected to said DNT-capable data network via said at least one router, said second transceiver transmitting to a distinct second area;
- and
- at least one communicator unit assigned an address and enabled to communicate with either the first or the second wireless transceiver;
- wherein the at least one router maintains at least one routing table associating said assigned address with the first area where the communicator unit is operating, and upon determination that the communicator unit has moved or may move to the second area, updates the at least one routing table either before, during or after the move to the second area is accomplished.
