Abstract
An electrochemical cell includes an anode, a cathode including a gas diffusion electrode and having first and second surfaces, an inlet for gaseous oxidant that is in contact with the first surface of the cathode, and a liquid electrolyte. Water generated at the cathode may be transported by osmosis into the liquid electrolyte. The fuel cell may produce a current density of 200 mA/cm2 without cathode flooding.
Claims24
An electrochemical cell, comprising:
- an anode,
- a cathode, comprising a gas diffusion electrode and comprising first and second surfaces,
- an inlet for gaseous oxidant, in contact with the first surface of the cathode,
- a channel that is contiguous with the anode and with the second surface of the cathode, and
- a liquid electrolyte in the channel,
- where water generated at the cathode is transported by osmosis into the liquid electrolyte.

An electrochemical cell, comprising:
- an anode,
- a cathode, comprising a gas diffusion electrode and comprising first and second surfaces,
- an inlet for gaseous oxidant, in contact with the first surface of the cathode,
- a channel that is contiguous with the anode and with the second surface of the cathode, and
- a liquid electrolyte in the channel,
- where the electrochemical cell can produce a current density of 200 mA/cm2 without cathode flooding as measured by the polarization flooding test.

An electrochemical cell, comprising:
- an anode, comprising first and second surfaces,
- an inlet for fuel, in contact with the second surface of the anode,
- where the fuel comprises a liquid electrolyte,
- a cathode, comprising a gas diffusion electrode and comprising first and second surfaces,
- an inlet for gaseous oxidant, in contact with the first surface of the cathode,
- where the pressure of the gaseous oxidant is no greater than 0.14 MPa, and
- an electrolyte that is contiguous with the first surface of the anode and the second surface of the cathode,
- where the electrochemical cell can produce a current density of 200 mA/cm2 without cathode flooding as measured by the polarization flooding test, in the absence of an external water management component.
