Abstract
A structure having a thin film magnetic layer sandwiched between a substrate and a surface layer is bombarded with ions. The ions impact the surface layer and cause atoms from the surface layer to be moved to implant into the magnetic layer. Thereby the magnetic characteristics of a region of the magnetic layer are altered, modified or destroyed.
Claims18
A method for manufacture of a magnetic device, the method comprising:
- bombarding a surface layer covering a thin film layer of magnetic material with ions to displace atoms from the surface layer into the magnetic material to alter the magnetisation of an area within the magnetic material.
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the magnetic material is formed on a substrate.
A magnetic device manufactured using a method comprising:
- bombarding a surface layer covering a thin film layer of magnetic material with ions to displace atoms from the surface layer into the magnetic material to alter the magnetisation of an area within the magnetic material.
A magnetic device comprising a thin film magnetic layer on a substrate, the magnetic layer having a surface layer formed thereupon and having regions therein where magnetisation of the magnetic layer has been altered by atoms moved into the magnetic layer from the surface layer.
