Abstract
The invention provides a device having a surface and a functional layer associated with the surface, where the functional layer includes particles having a structure substituted with a functional group, where the functional group is adapted to modify a property of the device, the device is sufficiently biocompatible for application to a multicellular organism and the particles have an average diameter of about 5 nm to about 10 microns.

A device comprising a surface and a functional layer adherent to the surface, wherein the functional layer comprises NH2-terminated silica particles having an average diameter of about 5 nm to about 10 microns, and wherein the device is an implantable device or a drug delivery device and the device is sufficiently biocompatible for application to a multicellular organism.
A device comprising a surface and a functional layer adherent to the surface, wherein the functional layer comprises NH2-terminated silica particles having an average diameter of about 5 nm to about 10 microns, said particles having comprising at least one diagnostic or therapeutic agent coupled thereto, and wherein the device is an implantable device or a drug delivery device and the device is sufficiently biocompatible for application to a multicellular organism.
