Method and apparatus for optimistic locking using SQL select, update, delete, and insert statements

A computer program product comprising a computer usable medium including computer usable program code for optimistic locking, said computer program product comprising:

• computer usable program code for adding an integer column to a database table;
• computer usable program code for forming a prepared Structured Query Language statement, wherein a result set of the prepared Structured Query Language statement includes the integer column;
• computer usable program code for setting required parameter information in the prepared Structured Query Language statement;
• computer usable program code for executing the prepared Structured Query Language statement in a database transaction;
• computer usable program code for determining a unique key associated with an element of the result set of the prepared Structured Query Language statement;
• computer usable program code for determining a row of the database table to which the unique key is associated;
• computer usable program code for determining a value in the integer column of the determined row;
• and
• computer usable program code for storing the value in the integer column of the determined row to form a stored value associated with the unique key, wherein the stored value ceases to exist when the database transaction ends.

A data processing system for optimistic locking, said data processing system comprising:

• a storage device, wherein the storage device stores computer usable program code;
• and
• a processor, wherein the processor executes the computer usable program code to add an integer column to a database table;
• form a prepared Structured Query Language statement, wherein a result set of the prepared Structured Query Language statement includes the integer column;
• set required parameter information in the prepared Structured Query Language statement;
• execute the prepared Structured Query Language statement in a database transaction;
• determine a unique key associated with an element of the result set of the prepared Structured Query Language statement;
• determine a row of the database table to which the unique key is associated;
• determine a value in the integer column of the determined row;
• and store the value in the integer column of the determined row to form a stored value associated with the unique key, wherein the stored value ceases to exist when the database transaction ends.
