Abstract
An electrode structure and a mechanism for automated or user-selected operation or compensation of the electrodes, for example to determine tissue coverage and/or prevent arcing between bottom electrodes during electrocautery is disclosed.
Claims31
An electrocautery apparatus, comprising:
- a plurality of adjacent first electrodes forming a first electrode array;
- at least one second electrode;
- a power supply having outputs electrically coupled to the first electrodes and said at least one second electrode;
- means for selectively applying a voltage from the power supply between two or more electrodes among any of the electrodes in the first electrode array and said at least one second electrode;
- and
- means for determining the area of tissue coverage of at least one of any of said first electrodes and said at least one second electrode.
3 more elements
An electrocautery method, comprising the steps of:
- providing a plurality of adjacent first electrodes forming a first electrode array;
- providing at least one second electrode;
- providing a power supply having outputs electrically coupled to the first electrodes and said at least one second electrode;
- selectively applying a voltage from the power supply between two or more electrodes among any of the electrodes in the first electrode array and said at least one second electrode;
- and
- determining the area of tissue coverage of at least one of any of said first electrodes and said at least one second electrode.

- at least one of said first electrodes and said at least one second electrode further comprising:
- an electrode surface coated with a dielectric or non-conductive material that allows RF energy to be transmitted between said electrodes via capacitive coupling.
