Abstract
The devices and methods shown provide for the minimization of extravasation during arthroscopic surgery. The anti-extravasation sheath allows a surgeon to drain excess fluids from the soft tissue surrounding the surgical field during arthroscopic surgical procedures.
Claims18
An anti-extravasation sheath comprising:
- a tube characterized by a distal portion, a proximal portion, an outer surface, an inner surface, an inner diameter and an outer diameter;
- wherein the inner diameter of said tube is sized and dimensioned to permit fluid flow between the inner surface of the tube and an outer surface of an arthroscopic instrument when the arthroscopic instrument is disposed within the tube;
- a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from the inner surface of the tube and running longitudinally along the tube;
- a drainage lumen running longitudinally along the tube disposed within the ribs;
- wherein the ribs form a seal between the outer surface of the arthroscopic instrument and ribs when an arthroscopic instrument is inserted into the sheath;
- and
- wherein said ribs further define outer lumens between the outer surface of the arthroscopic instrument and inner surface of the tube.

A system for performing arthroscopic surgery, said system comprising:
- an arthroscopic instrument suitable for performing an arthroscopic surgical procedure;
- an anti-extravasation sheath having an inner diameter sized and dimensioned to permit fluid flow between the inner surface of the sheath and an outer surface of the arthroscopic instrument disposed within the sheath, said sheath having at least one rib extending inwardly from an inner surface of said sheath and running longitudinally along said sheath and at least one drainage lumen disposed within the rib;
- wherein said rib defines outer lumens between the outer surface of the arthroscopic instrument and the inner surface of the sheath;
- and
- wherein the sheath is adapted to be removably disposed over the arthroscopic instrument.

A system for performing arthroscopic surgery, said system comprising:
- an arthroscopic surgical instrument suitable for performing an arthroscopic surgical procedure, said arthroscopic surgical instrument having at least one longitudinal channel disposed on its outer surface;
- an anti-extravasation sheath having an inner diameter sized and dimensioned to permit fluid flow between the inner surface of the sheath and the channel of the arthroscopic instrument disposed within the sheath, said sheath having at least one drainage aperture disposed in the central portion of the sheath;
- wherein said sheath defines a drainage lumen between the channel and the inner surface of the sheath;
- and
- wherein the sheath is adapted to be removably disposed over the arthroscopic instrument.
2 more elements
A method for performing arthroscopic surgery comprising:
- providing an arthroscopic instrument suitable for performing an arthroscopic surgical procedure;
- providing an anti-extravasation sheath having at least one drainage aperture disposed on a central portion of the sheath;
- disposing the arthroscopic instrument inside the sheath;
- placing the at least one drainage aperture in fluid communication with tissue surrounding an arthroscopic surgical field;
- performing an arthroscopic surgical procedure with the arthroscopic instrument;
- and
- draining fluid from tissue surrounding the arthroscopic surgical field during the arthroscopic surgical procedure through the drainage aperture.
4 more elements
An anti-extravasation sheath comprising:
- an inner tube characterized by an inner diameter sized and dimensioned to closely fit around an outer diameter of an arthroscopic instrument;
- an outer tube disposed about the inner tube;
- a plurality of ribs extending between the inner and outer tubes and running along the length of the sheath;
- wherein the inner tube, the outer tube and the plurality of ribs bound a plurality of outer drainage lumens that extend between the inner and outer tubes and that run along the length of the sheath;
- and
- a plurality of drainage apertures disposed in the central portion of the outer tube, said drainage apertures in fluid communication with the drainage lumens and adapted to drain fluid from tissue surrounding an arthroscopic field during an arthroscopic surgical procedure.
