Abstract
Clay-based compositions capable of absorbing contaminants from surfaces or objects having surface faces, may be applied to a surface and later removed, the removed clay-based compositions absorbing at least a portion of the contaminant from the surface or object to which it was applied.
Claims18
A decontamination composition, comprising:
- a clay composition having interlayer boundaries;
- and
- a salt solution mixed with the clay composition, wherein the salt solution provides ions in at least a portion of the interlayer boundaries of the clay composition.
A decontamination composition, comprising:
- a sodium-montmorillonite clay, wherein the sodium-montmorillonite clay includes sodium ions in an interlayer of the clay, and
- a potassium chloride solution, wherein the potassium chloride solution swells the clay and provides potassium ions to the decontamination composition which displace at least a portion of the sodium ions in the interlayer of the clay.
A method for treating a contaminated surface, comprising:
- applying a clay decontamination composition to the contaminated surface, wherein the clay comprises at least one clay selected from the group consisting of beidellite mineral clays, nontronite mineral clays, sponite mineral clays, hectorite mineral clays, sauconite mineral clays, illite mineral clays, montmorillonite mineral clays, and smectite group mineral clays;
- allowing the clay decontamination composition to remain on the surface for a period of time;
- and
- removing the clay decontamination composition.
