Distributed architecture and methods for broadcast/multicast service

A method of operating a wireless communications network infrastructure entity comprising:

• receiving a service notification;
• broadcasting a counting request;
• sending a transmission request;
• receiving a resource allocation and scheduling profile;
• configuring a scheduling function using said resource allocation and scheduling profile;
• and
• transmitting data in a Point-to-Multipoint transmission mode using said scheduling function.

A base station comprising:

• a transceiver;
• and
• a controller coupled to said transceiver, configured to:
• receive a service notification;
• broadcast a counting request;
• send a transmission request;
• receive a resource allocation and scheduling profile;
• configure a scheduling function using said resource allocation and scheduling profile;
• and
• transmit data in a Point-to-Multipoint transmission mode using said scheduling function.

A network anchor entity comprising:

• a transceiver;
• and
• a controller coupled to said transceiver, configured to:
• receive a transmission request;
• create a resource allocation and scheduling profile;
• and
• send said resource allocation and scheduling profile.
