Abstract
Methods for the production of erythrose and/or erythritol are provided herein. Preferably, the methods include the step of electrolytic decarboxylation of a ribonic acid or arabinonic acid reactant to produce erythrose. Optionally, the reactant can be obtained from a suitable hexose sugar, such as allose, altrose, glucose, fructose or mannose. The erythrose product can be hydrogenated to produce erythritol.
Claims20
A method of producing erythrose, comprising the steps of:
- providing an acid solution comprising an acid selected from the group consisting of a ribonic acid and an arabinonic acid, the acid solution having between about 10% and 100% of the acid neutralized;
- and
- electrolytically decarboxylating the acid in the acid solution to produce erythrose.
A method of producing erythrose, comprising the steps of:
- decarboxylating a sugar selected from the group consisting of:
- allose, altrose, glucose, fructose and mannose, to produce an acid selected from the group consisting of:
- ribonic acid and arabinonic acid;
- combining the acid with a solvent to produce an acid solution comprising one or more acids selected from the group consisting of a ribonic acid and an arabinonic acid, the acid solution having between about 10% and 100% of at least one acid neutralized;
- and
- electrolytically decarboxylating the acid in the acid solution to produce erythrose.
A method of producing erythritol, comprising the steps of:
- providing an acid solution comprising an acid selected from the group consisting of a ribonic acid and an arabinonic acid, the acid solution having between about 10% and 100% of the acid neutralized;
- electrolytically decarboxylating the acid in the acid solution to produce erythrose;
- and
- hydrogenating the erythrose to convert the erythrose to erythritol.
