Abstract
Methods of using pomegranate extracts of the present invention for treating patients with atherosclerosis, or increased intima-media thickness of an artery, are provided. The methods comprise the step of administering to the patient a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an extract from pomegranate. The methods of the present invention may also be used to decrease the incidence of stroke or heart attack in a patient.
Claims12
A process for producing a therapeutically effective amount of an extract from pomegranate, wherein the extract is prepared by a process comprising the steps of:
- (a) crushing, squeezing, and enzymatically treating the whole fruits of pomegranate including inner and outer peels and the seeds to yield a juice component and an insoluble by-product component;
- (b) separating the juice component from the insoluble by-product component;
- (c) resuspending the insoluble by-product component in an aqueous medium;
- (d) crushing, squeezing, and mixing the resuspended by-product component to yield a soluble portion and an insoluble portion;
- (e) separating the soluble portion from the insoluble portion to produce the extract containing the soluble portion;
- and
- (f) combining the soluble portion with the juice component to produce the extract, wherein the resulting extract contains polyphenols.
A process for producing a therapeutically effective amount of an extract from pomegranate, comprising the steps of:
- (a) crushing, squeezing, and enzymatically treating the whole fruits of pomegranate including inner and outer peels and the seeds to yield a juice component and an insoluble by-product component;
- (b) separating the juice component from the insoluble by-product component;
- (c) resuspending the insoluble by-product component in an aqueous medium;
- (d) crushing, squeezing, and mixing the resuspended by-product component to yield a soluble portion and an insoluble portion in a mixture;
- and
- (e) separating the residual insoluble portions from the mixture to produce the resulting extract that contains polyphenols.
A process for producing a nutritive extract from a pomegranate, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing one or more of the pomegranate solids selected from the group consisting of the outer peel, the inner peel and seeds;
- (b) crushing and squeezing the selected pomegranate solids to create a mixture;
- (c) adding enzymes to the mixture in an amount sufficient to facilitate extraction of juice and filtration of insoluble elements from the mixture;
- and
- (d) removing residual insoluble material from the mixture to provide the resulting extract comprising juice and insoluble materials, wherein the resulting extract contains polyphenols.
A pharmaceutical or nutritional composition derived from pomegranate comprising:
- a pomegranate seed oil product;
- a pomegranate juice product;
- and
- a pomegranate peel product.
