Abstract
A cylinder of a printing press is mounted using a bearing block. A radial bearing is movable in spaced linear bearings along an adjustment direction of the cylinder. The bearing is embodied as a modular bearing unit which may be a one piece assembly. The linear bearing is included in the modular assembly which permits movement of the bearing block along with the radial bearings.

A device for mounting a cylinder on a side frame of a printing unit comprising:
- a radial bearing supporting a journal of said cylinder for rotation about an axis of rotation;
- a bearing block supporting said radial bearing;
- linear bearings supporting said bearing block for movement along a direction of adjustment of said cylinder, which direction of adjustment is perpendicular to said cylinder axis of rotation;
- a bearing unit including said radial bearing, said bearing block and said linear bearings, said bearing unit forming a complete structural unit;
- and
- a bearing unit support, at least one of said linear bearings being stationarily fixed to said bearing unit support and wherein said side frame has at least a partial overlap with an end surface of said cylinder when said cylinder is supported by said bearing unit in said side frame.
A printing unit comprising:
- at least first, second and third cylinders which function in coordination with each other and define a printing group;
- linear bearings supporting at least two of said cylinders for linear movement of each of said two supported cylinders each along a respective direction of adjustment, each said direction of adjustment forming an angle of not greater than 15° with a plane of connection defined by said axis of rotation of said one of said cylinders being adjusted and another one of said cylinders which is downstream, in a direction of second adjustment;
- a bearing unit for each of said cylinders, each said bearing unit supporting only one of said cylinders and each including at least one bearing element secured to a frame of said printing unit, said bearing element having a length that is less than a diameter of the associated one of said cylinders;
- and
- at least one power-controllable actuator associated with said bearing units and usable to act on said bearing units with a force in a direction of a printing point of said printing unit.
A method for adjusting at least first and second cylinders of a printing group to a print-on position including;
- placing said first cylinder, which is active in a printing position, at said print-on position;
- initially positioning said second cylinder away from said print-on position and with an adjustment range of said first cylinder;
- providing a first stop for maintaining said second cylinder in said away position;
- releasing said first stop and moving said second cylinder along an adjustment path into engagement with said first cylinder in said print-on position;
- providing a pressure medium operable actuator;
- using said actuator and acting on said second cylinder with a defined force during said engagement of said second cylinder with said first cylinder;
- supplying said pressure medium to said actuator at a defined pressure for providing said defined force;
- and
- providing a travel limitation in said adjustment path while said second cylinder is in said print-on position.
The method of drive 102 further including providing said first cylinder movable unit having a first cylinder travel path being limited in a direction up to said printing position by a stop.
