Abstract
Feed materials are melted in a first vessel to form a glass melt at a first temperature T1, the glass melt containing at least one fining agent. The molten glass is next cooled to a second temperature T2 less than T1 in a second vessel wherein an oxygen-comprising gas is not actively added (e.g. bubbled) into the melt during the duration of the time the melt is at T2. The molten glass is thereafter heated to a third temperature T3 greater than T1 and subsequently formed into a glass article.
Claims17
A method of making glass comprising:
- heating a feed material to form a molten glass at a first temperature T1, the molten glass comprising a multivalent oxide material;
- cooling the molten glass to a second temperature T2 less than TI;
- introducing a first gas comprising oxygen into the cooled molten glass at the second temperature;
- and
- heating the cooled molten glass to a third temperature T3>T1.
2 more elements
A method of making glass comprising
- a) providing a molten glass at a first temperature T1, the molten glass comprising a multivalent oxide material;
- b) cooling the molten glass to a second temperature T2 less than T1;
- c) introducing a gas comprising oxygen into the molten glass, wherein a viscosity of the molten glass in the introducing step is less than 1000 poise;
- d) heating the molten glass to a third temperature T3, where T3≧T1;
