System and method for providing hierarchical medical device control for automated patient management

A method for providing hierarchical medical device control for automated patient management, comprising:

• operatively coupling a processor to a plurality of medical devices on a substantially continual basis to receive sensor data;
• assigning a control strategy to the processor to specify actions to be taken by the medical devices to affect the attainment of a therapy goal;
• maintaining state selected from the group comprising a history of changes to the control strategy and past sensor data received from the medical devices;
• periodically receiving feedback comprising new sensor data from the medical devices and analyzing the feedback and the state against the actions specified in the control strategy;
• and
• providing control to one or more medical device in response to an actionable change from the actions specified in the control strategy.

An apparatus for providing hierarchical medical device control for automated patient management, comprising:

• means for operatively coupling a processor to a plurality of medical devices on a substantially continual basis to receive sensor data;
• means for assigning a control strategy to the processor to specify actions to be taken by the medical devices to affect the attainment of a therapy goal;
• means for maintaining state selected from the group comprising a history of changes to the control strategy and past sensor data received from the medical devices;
• means for periodically receiving feedback comprising new sensor data from the medical devices and means for analyzing the feedback and the state against the actions specified in the control strategy;
• and
• means for providing control to one or more medical device in response to an actionable change from the actions specified in the control strategy.
