Multi-mode medical device system and methods of manufacturing and using same

A multi-mode medical device system capable of MR internal imaging and of being tracked and visualized under MR guidance, the multi-mode medical device system comprising:

• a medical device;
• a tracking device coupled to the medical device and configured to transmit a signal to an MRI system, the signal being indicative of the position of the tracking device to allow the MRI system to track the tracking device;
• and
• an imaging device electrically coupled to the tracking device and coupled to the medical device, the imaging device configured to internally image from the point of view of the medical device, the imaging device further configured to receive a signal from the MRI system to allow the imaging device to be visualized using magnetic resonance imaging, the tracking device and the imaging device forming an integrated tracking and imaging circuit.

A method of performing an interventional procedure using an MRI system, the method comprising:

• moving a multi-mode medical device system toward a target area, the multi-mode medical device system including a medical device, a tracking device coupled to the medical device and an imaging device coupled to the medical device;
• tracking the tracking device as the multi-mode medical device system is moved toward the target area in a first mode of operation of the multi-mode medical device system;
• and
• internally imaging anatomical structures, portions thereof, or other objects inside a human or animal patient from the point of view of the multi-mode medical device system using the imaging device in a second mode of operation of the multi-mode medical device system,
• wherein tracking and internally imaging are done in a single pass of the multi-mode medical device system.

A multi-mode medical device system capable of MR internal imaging and of be tracked using an MRI system, the multi-mode medical device system comprising:

• a medical device;
• an RF coil coupled to the medical device and configured to transmit an RF signal to the MRI system, the signal being indicative of the position of the RF coil to allow the MRI system to track the RF coil;
• and
• a resonant loop electrically coupled to the RF coil and coupled to the medical device, the resonant loop configured to internally image from the point of view of the multi-mode medical device system.
